Brief Overview and Theory of Change

There’s a strong argument to be made that shifting political will towards an international governance agreement for AI should be the top priority for mitigating existential risk from future AI systems right now, but currently, resources painting a clearer picture of to most effectively do this are underprioritized and scattered. The purpose of this project is to create a central resource to help more people understand what helps the most with this, and to try to minimize friction for them to contribute to this work. It tries to answer high-level questions like “What progress has been made so far?”, “What still needs to happen?”, “Given our evidence thus far, what would most likely make the most difference in getting that to happen?”, and helps the reader “zoom in” to specific parts to identify what they ought to prioritize, based on an understanding of how it fits into the big-picture goal. Most of the value is knowledge-mapping and providing better structure for finding external resources that apply to narrow topics; I expect relatively little original writing to be published on the project itself, other than insofar as it is in service of this goal.

It’s worth noting I have no policy background and am working on this project because I wanted something like this to exist after becoming convinced I ought to pivot to international governance work.

Open contribution

In the spirit of “minimizing friction to contribute”, readers are encouraged to contribute to the content of the website and submit new original works from e.g. their blog posts to be included if they fill current gaps well, and I will probably write some of my own. This page also includes ideas for content to prioritize adding next and proposed structural changes to the website itself.

Future project developments

As this is worked on, increasingly more pages will be broken into sub-maps and/or sub-pages insofar as this is helpful for the greater goal of the project. It’s sort of a constant work-in-progress, although I expect I will likely eventually decrease or even cease my efforts on this project as it helps me find higher-leverage ways to contribute directly.
